About the Journal
AKSEN Journal of Contemporary Islamic Law (AJCIL) is a peer-reviewed, open access journal publishing original research at the intersection of classical Islamic legal thought and contemporary legal practice. The journal examines how Islamic jurisprudence — from doctrinal theory to codified family, criminal, and financial law — is interpreted, applied, and contested across Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority contexts, with particular attention to Southeast Asia and the Nusantara region. AJCIL welcomes doctrinal, comparative, and socio-legal scholarship on topics ranging from constitutional and human rights law to Islamic bioethics and digital-age legal questions, published biannually in English and Bahasa Indonesia under a CC BY-SA 4.0 open access license.
AJCIL invites original research papers, conceptual contributions, case studies, and critical reviews that advance both theory and practical understanding of Islamic law and connected socio-legal fields. The journal favors scholarship that is critical, interdisciplinary, and attentive to context, spanning a wide range of legal traditions, institutions, and social environments.
