About the Journal
AKSEN Journal of Contemporary Islamic Law (AJCIL)
Overview
AKSEN Journal of Contemporary Islamic Law (AJCIL) is a peer-reviewed, open access academic journal dedicated to scholarship on Islamic law (fiqh, shari'ah, and usul al-fiqh) as it engages with the legal, social, political, and technological realities of the contemporary world. The journal is published by AKSEN (Akademika Semesta Nusantara).
AJCIL provides a scholarly home for doctrinal, comparative, and socio-legal research on Islamic law — with particular attention to Southeast Asian and Nusantara legal contexts — situated within broader global conversations on Islamic jurisprudence, legal reform, and comparative law. For the full statement of scope, see the journal's Aims, Scope, and Focus document.

Why AJCIL
The journal is designed to fill a specific niche: rigorous engagement with classical Islamic legal methodology combined with contemporary legal relevance — including Islamic finance, family and criminal law reform, constitutional and human rights questions, bioethics, environmental law, and the legal implications of digital technology. It is particularly attentive to how Islamic law is interpreted, codified, and contested in Southeast Asia, while remaining open to comparative scholarship from the wider Muslim world.
AJCIL does not publish devotional, polemical, or purely sectarian content; all submissions are expected to meet the standards of critical academic legal scholarship.
For Authors
- Manuscripts may be submitted in English or Indonesian.
- Full Author Guidelines, including manuscript structure, formatting specifications, transliteration conventions, and Chicago 17th-edition referencing requirements, are published separately.
- All manuscripts are screened for plagiarism prior to review (see Plagiarism Screening Policy).
- Authors retain copyright and publish under CC BY-SA 4.0, with no publication embargo (see Copyright Notice and Open Access Policy).
- A fee waiver policy exists for authors unable to pay the Article Publication Charge (see Publication Fees).
- Authors are encouraged to register an ORCID iD to support accurate attribution and discoverability.
For Reviewers
- AJCIL uses double-blind peer review; reviewer identities are not disclosed to authors unless a reviewer opts to sign their review.
- Reviewers are asked to evaluate manuscripts for relevance, originality, doctrinal/methodological rigor, clarity, and ethical compliance (see Peer Review Process).
- Reviewers are expected to maintain confidentiality and disclose any conflicts of interest.
- The journal values reviewers with expertise in Islamic legal theory, comparative law, and related fields such as human rights law, Islamic finance, or Southeast Asian legal studies. [Placeholder: if AJCIL wishes to recruit reviewers publicly, consider adding a "Become a Reviewer" call-to-action and contact/registration link here.]
For Readers
- All published content is freely accessible — there are no subscription fees, paywalls, or registration requirements to read AJCIL articles.
- Published articles may be shared and adapted under CC BY-SA 4.0, provided proper attribution is given and derivative works are shared under an equivalent license.
- Readers with concerns about a published article's integrity may contact the editorial office (see Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement and Retraction and Correction Policy).
Editorial Governance
[Placeholder: this section should introduce the Editor-in-Chief, Section Editors, and Editorial Board once finalized — including names, institutional affiliations, and areas of expertise. A separate Editorial Board page/document is recommended given the level of detail typically expected (see prior discussion). Readers, authors, and indexing services generally expect to see an identifiable, credentialed editorial team as a basic marker of a journal's legitimacy.]
Publication Ethics
AJCIL is committed to upholding rigorous standards of research and publication integrity, addressing authorship, conflicts of interest, data transparency, allegations of misconduct, and post-publication corrections — detailed fully in the journal's Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement, Retraction and Correction Policy, and Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies Policy.
