Publication Fee
AKSEN Journal of Contemporary Islamic Law (AJCIL)
AJCIL is committed to keeping publication costs transparent and accessible to scholars at all career stages. The fee structure below applies to all submissions unless a waiver is granted (see Section 4).
1. Fee Schedule
| Stage | Fee (IDR) | When Charged | Refundable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Article Submission | IDR 0.00 (Free) | At submission | N/A |
| Fast-Track Review (optional) | IDR 150,000 | At author's request, upon submission or during initial editorial check | Non-refundable |
| Article Publication (APC) | IDR 750,000 | Upon final acceptance, before publication | Non-refundable once processing has begun |
| Waiver-approved Charges | IDR 0.00 | N/A | N/A |
[Placeholder: confirm whether fees apply per-manuscript or per-author, and whether amounts are inclusive or exclusive of bank/payment-gateway transfer charges.]
2. Fee Descriptions
2.1 Article Submission — IDR 0.00
Submission of a manuscript for initial editorial screening and peer review is free of charge. No payment is required at this stage, and submission does not guarantee acceptance or publication.
2.2 Fast-Track Review — IDR 150,000 (optional)
Authors may optionally request an expedited editorial and peer-review process for an additional fee of IDR 150,000.
- Fast-track status affects the speed of the review timeline only (e.g., prioritized reviewer assignment and editorial handling) and does not affect the outcome, rigor, or objectivity of the review.
- Payment of the fast-track fee does not guarantee acceptance.
- [Placeholder: specify the guaranteed turnaround time for fast-track review, e.g., "editorial decision within X weeks," once the editorial board commits to a service standard.]
2.3 Article Publication Charge (APC) — IDR 750,000
Upon final acceptance of a manuscript (after peer review and any required revisions), a one-time Article Publication Charge of IDR 750,000 applies. This fee covers the costs associated with copyediting, typesetting, DOI registration, archiving, and open-access hosting.
- The APC is charged only after a manuscript has been accepted — never at submission or during review.
- The APC does not influence the editorial decision; acceptance decisions are made prior to, and independently of, any fee discussion.
3. What the Fees Cover / Do Not Cover
[Placeholder — to be confirmed by the editorial/finance team, but typically includes:]
- Covers: editorial processing, copyediting, typesetting/layout, DOI assignment, indexing submission, long-term digital archiving, hosting on the journal's platform.
- Does not cover: translation services, professional English-language editing beyond standard copyediting, or extensive post-acceptance restructuring requested by the author.
4. Waiver Policy
AJCIL recognizes that publication fees can be a barrier to disseminating quality scholarship, particularly for early-career researchers, independent scholars, and authors from institutions with limited funding. Accordingly, the journal offers a fee waiver policy.
4.1 Waiver Amount
Approved waivers reduce the applicable charge(s) to IDR 0.00.
4.2 Eligibility Criteria
[Placeholder — the editorial board should finalize specific eligibility categories; common models include:]
- Authors affiliated with institutions in low-resource settings or without institutional funding support
- Independent researchers without access to institutional or grant funding
- Graduate students without funding, upon request and justification
- Discretionary waivers granted by the Editor-in-Chief on a case-by-case basis
4.3 Application Process
- Waiver requests must be submitted in writing at the time of submission (or immediately upon acceptance, for the APC), stating the reason for the request.
- Waiver decisions are made by the Editor-in-Chief or a designated finance/editorial officer, independent of the peer-review process, so that reviewers and section editors remain unaware of an author's fee or waiver status.
- Authors will be notified of the waiver decision [placeholder: specify timeframe].
4.4 Partial Waivers
[Placeholder: specify whether partial waivers — e.g., 50% reduction — are available, or whether the policy is all-or-nothing.]
5. Payment Method and Timing
- Payment instructions (bank transfer details, payment gateway, etc.) will be provided by the editorial office upon (a) request for fast-track review, or (b) final acceptance for publication.
- [Placeholder: insert accepted payment methods, account details or payment gateway link, and proof-of-payment submission process.]
- No fees are refundable after a manuscript has entered the corresponding processing stage (e.g., once fast-track review has begun, or once post-acceptance production has started), except in cases of demonstrable editorial or administrative error.
6. Transparency and Independence from Editorial Decisions
Consistent with standard scholarly publishing ethics, AJCIL affirms that:
- All manuscripts undergo the same peer-review process regardless of an author's ability to pay.
- Fee status (including waiver requests) is not disclosed to peer reviewers and does not factor into editorial decisions.
- This fee schedule will be published openly on the journal's website and submission portal.
